How to Travel with Netflix 2023
How much mobile data Netflix uses on a trip, how many hours each data allowance covers, and the settings to change before you fly, based on Netflix's own…
Roamify Editorial Team

Netflix works on your phone and laptop when you travel. Netflix's Help Center says to use it as usual on mobile devices and computers, and you can sign in to a new TV, like at a hotel or a holiday rental. What catches people out is the mobile data.
This guide covers the data side of the trip: what Netflix says it uses, how many hours of viewing each data allowance really covers, and the settings to change before you leave. For account rules, library changes and verification prompts, read our Netflix abroad in 2026 guide.
How much data does Netflix use abroad? #
Netflix's own figures run from up to 0.3 GB an hour on Low to up to 7 GB on Ultra HD, with standard definition at up to 1 GB and HD at up to 3 GB. In the phone app, Save Data gives about 6 hours per GB and Automatic about 4 hours per GB. So a 5 GB allowance covers around 20 hours of phone viewing on Automatic, but under 2 hours of HD at Netflix's upper figure.
In the table, "Account" rows are the data usage options under Account > Profiles > Playback settings, and "Phone app" rows are the Cellular Data Usage options in the Netflix mobile app. The last column is our arithmetic from Netflix's figures.
| Setting | What Netflix says it uses | How long 1 GB lasts at that figure |
|---|---|---|
| Account: Low | Up to 0.3 GB an hour | About 3 hours 20 minutes |
| Account: Medium | Up to 0.7 GB an hour | About 1 hour 25 minutes |
| Account: High, standard definition | Up to 1 GB an hour | About 1 hour |
| Account: High, HD | Up to 3 GB an hour | About 20 minutes |
| Account: High, Ultra HD (4K) | Up to 7 GB an hour | About 9 minutes |
| Account: Auto | Adjusts to your connection speed, no fixed figure | Depends on the quality it picks |
| Phone app: Save Data | About 6 hours per GB | About 6 hours |
| Phone app: Automatic | About 4 hours per GB | About 4 hours |
| Phone app: Maximum Data | 1 GB per 20 minutes or more | 20 minutes or less |
Netflix's figures are maximums, so real use can be lower. The account setting is per profile, and Auto aims for the highest quality your connection allows. That matters when a laptop shares your phone's data: a fast connection can push Auto toward HD, which is where gigabytes disappear. The phone app has its own cellular option, separate from the account setting.
How many gigabytes do you need for Netflix on a trip? #
Start with a simple sum: the hours you expect to watch, multiplied by the gigabytes per hour at the setting you will use. Then leave room for everything else your phone does, because maps, messaging and photos use data too. Our eSIM data planning guide covers those.
| Data allowance | Save Data (about 6 hours per GB) | Automatic (about 4 hours per GB) | Standard definition (up to 1 GB an hour) | HD (up to 3 GB an hour) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 GB | 6 hours | 4 hours | 1 hour | 20 minutes |
| 3 GB | 18 hours | 12 hours | 3 hours | 1 hour |
| 5 GB | 30 hours | 20 hours | 5 hours | 1 hour 40 minutes |
| 10 GB | 60 hours | 40 hours | 10 hours | 3 hours 20 minutes |
| 20 GB | 120 hours | 80 hours | 20 hours | 6 hours 40 minutes |
The phone app columns use the "about" figures Netflix gives, and the standard definition and HD columns use its upper figures, so you may get more hours than shown. Three examples:
- A week at 1 hour a day, so 7 hours: about 1.2 GB on Save Data, about 1.75 GB on Automatic, up to 7 GB at standard definition and up to 21 GB at HD.
- Ten evenings, 2 hours a night on Automatic: 20 hours, so about 5 GB.
- A laptop on your phone's hotspot, 2 hours a night for 5 nights at HD: up to 30 GB. The same 10 hours at Medium: up to 7 GB.
If the numbers look big for the plan you had in mind, you have two levers: lower the quality, or download instead of streaming.
Download before you go: the cheapest data is the data you never use #
Netflix says downloads work on Android phones and tablets, iPhones and iPads, Amazon Fire tablets and Chromebooks with Google Play. They are the biggest saver, and they suit hotel or home Wi-Fi. What to know before you rely on them:
- Ad-free plans allow up to 100 active downloads at a time per device. Ad-supported plans are limited to 15 downloads per device per calendar month.
- You need to stay signed in to watch downloads offline.
- Downloads expire after a certain amount of time, and some titles limit how many times they can be downloaded or renewed because of studio and license agreements.
- The Netflix page about using it outside your home warns that downloaded titles on your phone or tablet may not be available while you are in a different country, and that choices for streaming and downloading vary by country.
Download more than you think you need, a day or two before you leave, and check that each title still plays. Treat any single download as a bonus, not your only plan for a long flight or train ride.
A VPN is not a reliable way to keep your home library abroad either. Netflix's Help Center says that with a VPN you may only be shown titles it has worldwide licensing for, that VPNs are not supported for live events or on the ad-supported plan, and that you may need to turn the VPN off to see what is available in your region.
Four Netflix settings to change before you leave #
- Cellular Data Usage. In the app, go to My Netflix, your profile name, App Settings, Video Playback, then Cellular Data Usage. The options are Save Data, Automatic, Wi-Fi Only and Maximum Data (1 GB per 20 minutes or more).
- Downloads. Under App Settings, keep Downloads on Wi-Fi Only, which is the default. If you see "Waiting for Wi-Fi", the setting is doing its job.
- Autoplay. Tap My Netflix, your profile name, Manage Profiles, then the profile, and switch off Autoplay Previews and Autoplay Next Episode so video does not start on its own.
- Quality on a laptop. If a laptop will use your phone's hotspot, open Account > Profiles > Playback settings in the browser and choose Medium or Low instead of Auto or High.
Each profile keeps its own settings, so change the one you will actually use.
Wi-Fi or mobile data: which should Netflix use? #
Hotel Wi-Fi is the natural place for a long viewing session, and it costs your plan nothing. Keep your eSIM for the moments in between, and for the first hours of the trip, when your phone needs data for maps, rides and bookings. We explain why airport Wi-Fi often fails on arrival in a separate guide.
Setting up a travel eSIM for streaming #
Streaming only needs mobile data, so you do not need a plan with a phone number for Netflix. A few setup details avoid the usual surprises:
- Install on Wi-Fi, activate on arrival. Roamify's setup guide asks for a stable Wi-Fi connection while you install, and your plan's days start counting when you activate the eSIM, not when you install it. See when your plan starts.
- Use the eSIM for data and switch your home line off. On iPhone, set the Roamify eSIM as the line for cellular data, turn on Data Roaming for that line, and turn off your home line to avoid roaming charges, as Roamify's iPhone setup guide recommends. Android menus differ, but the idea is the same.
- Watch your data. In the Roamify app, My eSIMs shows how much data you have left, where available. Without an account, iPhone shows usage under Settings > Cellular and Android under Settings > Network and internet > Data usage. Here is how to check your data usage.
- Know what happens at zero. When the data or the days run out, the eSIM stops working until you top up (details here). Top up before a long evening of streaming, not halfway through it.
- Hotspot is where data vanishes. Roamify eSIMs work with your phone's built-in hotspot, so a laptop or tablet can stream too. If you rely on that, check your plan's details first and use the playback settings above, because a laptop on HD is one of the quickest ways to empty a plan.
Pre-trip checklist #
- Download your shows on Wi-Fi a day or two before you leave, and check they play.
- Set Cellular Data Usage to Save Data or Wi-Fi Only.
- Turn off Autoplay Previews and Autoplay Next Episode.
- Set Medium or Low playback for any laptop that will use your hotspot.
- Pick a data allowance from the table above, with room for maps and messaging.
- Install your eSIM on Wi-Fi, and activate it when you land.
Frequently asked questions #
Can I watch Netflix downloads in another country? #
Often, but not always. Netflix says downloaded titles on your phone or tablet may not be available while you are in a different country, and downloads expire after a certain amount of time. Download a few extra titles and check them before you fly.
Do I need a phone number or a calling plan to stream Netflix? #
No. Streaming only needs mobile data, so a data-only eSIM does the job.
Does Netflix use data when I am just browsing? #
It can. Previews can play as you browse and the next episode can start on its own unless you switch off Autoplay Previews and Autoplay Next Episode in your profile settings.
What happens if my eSIM data runs out mid-trip? #
The eSIM stops working until you top up, and the same happens when the days in the plan run out. You can check what is left in the Roamify app under My eSIMs.
Choose your data before you fly #
Once you know your hours, pick a plan by destination and size. Roamify plans start from $2, and you can buy, install and manage your eSIM in the Roamify app.
How we put this together: Netflix figures and menu paths come from the Netflix Help Center pages linked above, checked on October 6, 2026. The tables and examples are our own arithmetic from those figures, not Netflix measurements. Roamify setup details come from the Roamify help center.
