Travelers: Save Battery on Google Maps

Turn-by-turn navigation is one of the hardest jobs you give a phone. The screen stays on, location tracking runs, and the map keeps loading. On a trip you navigate more than you do at home, so the battery takes the hit.

This guide sticks to what Google, Apple and the Pixel team document: offline maps and what they cannot do, your phone's power-saving mode, and what to carry through airport security. It also covers the catch for days on foot, because offline maps do not give walking directions.

The quick version #

  1. Download offline maps for each area before you leave, on Wi-Fi.
  2. Turn on Low Power Mode (iPhone) or Battery Saver (Pixel) for long days out.
  3. If you use Pixel Battery Saver, keep the screen on while you follow a route: Google says location services stop when the screen is off.
  4. Carry a power bank in your carry-on bag, never in checked luggage.
  5. Plan for a live connection on walking and transit days, because offline maps do not provide those directions.

Download offline maps before you leave #

On iPhone and Android the steps in Google's help page are short: search for a place, open its details, tap More, choose Download offline map, then tap Download. Do it on Wi-Fi at home or in your hotel.

Know the limits before you rely on it. Google says that when you are offline, transit, bicycling and walking directions are unavailable, and that driving directions work but without traffic information or alternate routes.

Directions offlineAvailable?
DrivingYes, without traffic information or alternate routes
WalkingNo
TransitNo
BicyclingNo

Offline maps also expire. Update them before they do: Google Maps tries to update an area automatically over Wi-Fi once it is within 15 days of expiring, but check your downloads before a long trip.

Google does not publish battery figures for offline maps, so we won't promise a percentage. What they change is how much you depend on a connection for driving routes.

Use your phone's power-saving mode #

iPhone: Low Power Mode #

Apple says Low Power Mode reduces display brightness, sets Auto-Lock to 30 seconds, turns off some visual effects, pauses iCloud Photos temporarily, and turns off automatic downloads, email fetch and Background App Refresh. Turn it on in Settings > Battery (the switch is called Low Power Mode, or sits under Power Mode on newer iPhones), or tap the battery icon in Control Center. It switches off by itself when you charge to 80% or higher.

Pixel: Battery Saver #

Google says Standard Battery Saver dims the wallpaper slightly, makes apps refresh only when you open them, stops location services when the screen is off, stops background apps unless you turn off battery optimization, and turns on Dark theme. A 5G Pixel may use 4G while it is on. Turn it on from quick settings or in Settings > Battery > Battery Saver. Other Android phones have similar modes under different names.

For navigation, the useful detail is the one about location services: with Battery Saver on, keep the screen on while you follow a route.

Where you still need data: walking and transit #

Offline maps cannot give walking or transit directions, so city days on foot are when a live connection matters most. A travel eSIM keeps Google Maps working for those routes without roaming rates or a search for Wi-Fi. Install it before you leave: the plan starts when you activate it, not when you install it (when your plan starts).

An eSIM does not change how hard the screen and location tracking work. Our eSIM battery guide explains that the eSIM itself does not meaningfully drain the battery, and that weak networks and dual SIM mode are the real factors. More general tips are in our battery life guide, and the data planning guide helps you size a plan.

Carrying power on a plane #

A power bank is the most dependable backup. The TSA says spare lithium batteries, including power banks, must be carried in carry-on baggage only, and lithium ion batteries are limited to 100 watt hours each. Airlines can have their own rules too, so check yours before you fly.

Frequently asked questions #

Do offline maps save battery? #

Google does not say. It documents that offline maps let you follow driving routes inside a downloaded area without a connection. For battery, the settings above are the ones Apple and Google document.

Can I walk with offline maps? #

Not with directions. Google says walking, transit and bicycling directions are unavailable offline.

How do I update offline maps? #

Update them before they expire. Over Wi-Fi, Google Maps tries to update an area automatically once it is within 15 days of expiring.

Can I use a power bank on a plane? #

The TSA rules cover how to carry one: carry-on only, up to 100 watt hours per battery. Airlines set their own rules for using devices in flight, so check with yours.

Do I need mobile data for Google Maps abroad? #

Not for driving routes inside a downloaded area. For walking, transit and bicycling directions, yes, and a travel eSIM covers that.

Pick your data before you go #

Choose a plan by destination and size in the Roamify app, install it before you leave, and keep your home SIM for calls if you want.
