What Does ‘No SIM Restrictions’ Mean? What iPhone Users Should Know

What does No SIM restrictions mean on iPhone? #

"No SIM restrictions" next to Carrier Lock in Settings > General > About means your iPhone is unlocked, so it can work with a SIM or eSIM from another carrier. Apple uses that exact message as its check for an unlocked iPhone (Apple Support: How to unlock your iPhone).

In plain terms, nothing is tying your phone to the carrier you bought it from. You can put in a different physical SIM, add an eSIM from another provider, or keep your home line and add a travel eSIM next to it. If you see anything else on that line, the phone is still locked to a carrier, and only that carrier can lift the lock.

How to check if your iPhone has No SIM restrictions #

It takes a few seconds.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap About.
  4. Scroll to Carrier Lock and read the message next to it.

If it says "No SIM restrictions", your iPhone is unlocked. Apple gives the same check on its page for Invalid SIM or No SIM alerts, which is a good hint that a carrier lock is one of the first things to rule out when a new SIM won't work.

If you see a different message, take a screenshot. It is useful to have when you contact your carrier.

Carrier-locked vs unlocked: what's the difference? #

A carrier-locked iPhone only works with SIMs and eSIMs from one carrier. Apple puts it simply: if your iPhone is locked to a carrier, it can be used only by that carrier (Apple Support).

An unlocked iPhone, the one that shows No SIM restrictions, can be used with different carriers. That is the only thing the setting tells you. It is not about your data plan, your phone number, or whether your current SIM is active.

A few things No SIM restrictions does not mean:

  • It doesn't mean you have no SIM installed. That shows up elsewhere, for example as a "No SIM" alert.
  • It doesn't mean every network will work. Your iPhone still needs to support the bands and services a carrier uses, and the carrier has to support eSIM if you want to use one (Apple Support).

A special case: unlocked for international use only #

In the United States, Apple notes that some carriers can unlock certain iPhone models so they work internationally, while staying restricted to that carrier inside the US (Apple Support: Wireless carrier support for iPhone in the US and Canada). If your carrier offers this, a travel eSIM can work abroad even though the phone won't take another US carrier's SIM. Ask your carrier which kind of unlock you have before you travel.

What to do if your iPhone is locked #

Apple can't unlock an iPhone for use with a different carrier. Only your current carrier can do it (Apple Support).

  1. Contact your carrier and ask for an unlock. Carriers set their own requirements for unlocking, so check them first.
  2. Give it time. Apple notes it might take the carrier a few days to complete the request, and you can contact them to check the status.
  3. Confirm on the phone. On iOS 14 and later, go back to Settings > General > About. Under Carrier Lock you should now see "No SIM restrictions". If you don't, contact your carrier again.
  4. Finish the unlock if needed. If you have a SIM from another carrier, Apple says you can remove your SIM and insert the new one, and the device will activate. If you are moving to an eSIM, you can set it up directly. If you have no other SIM, Apple's steps are to back up your iPhone, erase it, and restore from that backup.

Do this before your trip, not at the airport. An unlock request that takes a few days won't help you once you have landed.

Why it matters for a travel eSIM #

This setting is the first thing to check before you buy a travel eSIM. Apple says that to use your iPhone with another carrier when traveling internationally, your iPhone cannot be locked to a carrier (Apple Support: Use eSIM while traveling internationally). A travel eSIM is, by definition, another carrier's plan.

If your iPhone shows No SIM restrictions and supports eSIM, you can usually:

  • Install the travel eSIM at home, before you fly.
  • Keep your home number on its line and add the travel eSIM as a local data plan, one of the Dual SIM uses Apple lists (Apple Support).
  • Switch the travel eSIM off when you get home, without touching your home plan.

If you are not sure your phone supports eSIM at all, our eSIM compatibility check lists supported devices. For the full setup steps, see how to set up an eSIM on iPhone, and if you still need to unlock your phone, our guide to unlocking your iPhone for eSIM usage goes deeper.

If your eSIM is installed but you see no signal abroad, a carrier lock is one of the things to rule out. Our guide to why your phone says No Service abroad walks through the rest.

FAQ #

Does No SIM restrictions mean my iPhone is unlocked?

Yes. Apple says that if "No SIM restrictions" appears next to Carrier Lock in Settings > General > About, your iPhone is unlocked.

Where do I find Carrier Lock on iPhone?

Open Settings, tap General, then tap About. Carrier Lock is listed on that screen, with the lock status next to it.

Can Apple unlock my iPhone?

No. Apple says it can't unlock your iPhone for use with a different carrier. Only your current carrier can.

Do I need an unlocked iPhone to use a travel eSIM?

Yes. Apple says your iPhone cannot be locked to a carrier if you want to use it with another carrier while traveling internationally. Check for No SIM restrictions before you buy.

Will unlocking delete my data?

Not in most cases. If your carrier confirms the unlock, inserting another carrier's SIM finishes it. Apple only describes erasing and restoring from a backup as the route if you don't have another SIM to use.

Does No SIM restrictions mean I don't have a SIM?

No. It only describes the carrier lock. Whether a SIM or eSIM is installed and active is shown in Settings > Cellular.
