Frequently Asked Questions about the Scotland eSIM
Everything you need to know about the Scotland eSIM.
01When does my data plan start?
This plan's days start when the eSIM first connects to a network in its coverage area, not when you buy or install it. Some other Scotland plans start differently. Each plan's page shows its rule under Activation.
02Can I make phone calls and send messages with the eSIM?
Most Scotland plans are data-only, with no phone number for calls or texts. Plans marked Call include a phone number, call minutes and text messages (SMS). On a data-only plan you can still call and message over apps like WhatsApp.
03When will I receive my eSIM?
Once you purchase an eSIM, you will receive it immediately to your email address. You then scan the QR code to install the eSIM. If you have not installed, activated or used your eSIM, you can ask us to review a refund within 30 calendar days of purchase, when the order is linked to your Roamify account email. See our refund policy for more information.
04Can I keep my WhatsApp number?
You don't need to do anything to keep your WhatsApp number. You'll automatically keep your number, contacts and conversations.
05What is the network speed of the eSIM?
The Roamify eSIM offers maximum speed coverage. But bear in mind that in some areas of limited coverage there may be a lower speed connection.
06Do I have to activate data roaming on my device?
Yes. To ensure that your eSIM gets the best coverage, you must turn on data roaming on your mobile settings. This will not incur any additional charges, as long as you have already set up the eSIM.
07Will my eSIM have a local IP address in Scotland?
Not always. This plan connects through a roaming partner, so websites and apps may see an IP address registered in another country rather than in Scotland. This is normal for travel eSIMs and does not change your data allowance, speed or coverage. If a service requires a local IP address, such as some banking apps or regional streaming catalogues, connect through a local network or use a VPN set to Scotland.
08What do I do if I delete or lose my eSIM's QR code?
If you cannot find the code, please contact our 24/7 customer support team at support@getroamify.com or our online chat function. We will resend the code to your email.
09What happens if I use up my data or my days of validity?
On Scotland Unlimited plans, full speed lasts up to 1 GB, then data is slowed to 5 Mbps, not cut off. On Scotland plans with a fixed amount of data, data stops or is slowed after a set amount, depending on the plan; on some plans that happens before all of the plan's data is used. Some of them can be topped up with more data. Each plan's page shows its rule under Fair use policy. When the plan's days run out, your eSIM stops working and you lose its internet connection.
10What eSIM data plan should I choose for Scotland?
You can choose variable plans as shown above. You can contact us at any time if you're not sure which plan is best for you.
11Will the connection speed be reduced?
On Scotland Unlimited plans, full speed lasts up to 1 GB, then data is slowed to 5 Mbps, not cut off. If your connection seems slower than that, contact us by chat and we will check it.
12Can I renew or extend the data on my eSIM?
This plan can't be topped up, but some other Scotland plans can: check Top-up in a plan's details before you buy. Otherwise, buy a new Scotland plan when this one runs out.
13Can I share data with other devices?
Yes, you can share data with other devices. You can do this by activating the hotspot on your device.
14How do I set up the eSIM on my device?
Once you make your purchase, we will send you an email with precise instructions to install your eSIM in two ways: by scanning the QR code or by copying and pasting the manual installation codes. To install with the first option, it is essential that the QR code is printed or on another device. Otherwise, you can follow the manual installation instructions for your Roamify eSIM. If your device is iOS, go to Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM and scan the QR code or paste the manual installation codes sent to your email. Then follow the on-screen instructions and choose your new eSIM as the line for mobile data. If your plan includes calls or texts, choose the Roamify eSIM as the line for those too. On a data-only plan, keep your physical SIM as the line for calls and texts. If your device is Android, follow the instructions we will email you to install your Roamify eSIM. When you are in Scotland, select your Roamify eSIM for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it. At Roamify, we want to make setting up your eSIM as easy as possible. For this reason, all our eSIM products come with complete instructions for easy setup. If you have any questions or need help, don't hesitate to contact our customer support team. We will be there for you 24/7.
15When should I set up my eSIM?
You can install this plan a day or two before you travel, over Wi-Fi. Its days start only when it first connects to a network in its coverage area. When you are in Scotland, select the Roamify eSIM for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it. An installed eSIM is generally no longer refundable. See our refund policy.
16How can I check how much data I have left?
To check your remaining data, log in to our web app with the access details we emailed you when you made your purchase. You can also check your data use in your device's mobile data settings.
17How many times can I use my eSIM card?
Your eSIM can only be activated on one device. If you delete the eSIM from your device, you will not be able to reuse it. You cannot scan the QR code on two devices.
18How can I delete the Roamify eSIM once I've used my data?
You don't need to delete the eSIM. But if you want to, please see how to delete eSIM on iOS and Android.
19Can I use my (physical) SIM card and Roamify eSIM at the same time?
Yes. Choose the Roamify eSIM as the line for mobile data in your device settings. On a data-only plan, keep your physical SIM for calls and texts; if your plan includes calls or texts, choose the Roamify eSIM as the line for those too. If data roaming stays on for your physical SIM, your home network provider may charge roaming fees, so turn it off for that line.
20How do I get a refund?
Most unused eSIM purchases are eligible for a refund review when you send your request within 30 calendar days of purchase. To qualify, the eSIM must not be activated, installed, or consumed, and the order must be linked to your Roamify account email. Once an eSIM has been activated or installed, or has recorded data usage, it generally cannot be refunded. Please see our eSIM Refund Policy for the full terms.
21Which eSIM carrier will I connect to in Scotland
Roamify's Scotland eSIM connects to O2, 3, Vodafone, as listed for every plan on this page.
Connectivity in the Highlands and Beyond
Scotland, or Alba in Gaelic, offers a range of landscapes from the bustling streets of Edinburgh and Glasgow to the serene beauty of Inverness. As you journey through the rugged terrain of the North Coast 500 or hike the dramatic ridges of the Isle of Skye, staying connected becomes essential for navigation and keeping in touch with loved ones. The blend of urban centres and remote wilderness makes for a varied connectivity experience in this captivating country.
In the major cities like Edinburgh and Glasgow, mobile network coverage is robust, ensuring a reliable connection for your urban adventures. However, as you venture into the Highlands and islands, such as the remote stretches of the North Coast 500 or the Isle of Skye, network coverage can become patchy. Mountainous areas and isolated islands are especially prone to weak signals, so it's important to plan accordingly. While travelling through national parks or along long rail routes, expect intermittent service.
Before arriving in Scotland, it's wise to set up your eSIM to ensure immediate connectivity. Download crucial maps, travel apps, and guides in advance, especially if planning to explore less populated regions like the Highlands or the islands. On arrival, you can expect urban areas to provide a stable connection, while more remote locations might require a degree of patience and preparation.
Using an eSIM in Scotland
Answers to the questions travellers actually ask about staying connected in Scotland.
Will my eSIM work on the Isle of Skye?
Yes. The Isle of Skye is the largest of the Inner Hebrides of Scotland, and our Scotland plans cover Scotland, so the same plan works there with nothing extra to buy. On the island your Roamify eSIM connects to O2, 3 or Vodafone where they have signal, and we cannot say where on Skye each of them reaches.
Is it possible to use my eSIM for travel between Scotland and England?
Not on a Scotland plan alone: our Scotland plans list only Scotland in their coverage. Our Europe plan lists both Scotland and the United Kingdom. Its page lists every country it covers. Or keep your Scotland plan and add our United Kingdom plan for the English part. In England, select that eSIM for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it.
Are there any regions in Scotland where eSIM coverage is particularly sparse?
It depends on the O2, 3 and Vodafone signal there. Those are the networks our Scotland plans use, on 4G, LTE and 5G. The Highlands are one of the most sparsely populated areas in Europe and the most mountainous part of the United Kingdom. We cannot point to the weak spots there or promise signal in a given glen or on a small island.
Is it necessary to get a local eSIM if I only plan to visit Edinburgh?
No. We are the provider: you buy our Scotland eSIM online and we email the QR code right after purchase. Our Scotland plans cover Scotland as a whole, Edinburgh included. The eSIM connects to O2, 3 or Vodafone wherever they have signal.
Can switching off 5G help my eSIM connection in rural Scotland?
It does not add coverage. Our Scotland plans list 4G, LTE and 5G on O2, 3 and Vodafone, and where 5G is not offered the phone uses 4G or LTE by itself, so turning 5G off does not extend where those networks reach in the Highlands. Instead, check that airplane mode is off, the Roamify eSIM is on and picked for mobile data, and data roaming is on for it, then restart. If it still does not connect, contact our 24/7 support team by chat or at support@getroamify.com.
